URBAN HIKE

Little Italy
updated: Aug 06, 2011, 4:35 PM

By the dedicated staff of New Haven Edhat

At first glance if you're driving by "The Little Italy" section in New Haven aka Wooster St. you may just fly by without even knowing it was there. Wooster St. consists of world famous pizza, brown stone walk- ups, a couple of Italian clubs, and a whole lot of charm!

When you first pull onto Wooster is Sally's Pizza. For decades now there has been the "who has the greatest pizza debate". Sally's ranks up in the #1 spot! You can check out Sally's here!

We couldn't help but laugh because even the street stamps on Wooster St. were Italian! In fact this one we were able to hold in our hand!

A few more feet past Seabury Realtors and Ferruci Hair salon brought us to Wooster Memorial Park!

We crossed over DePalma Ct. to Paul Russo Memorial Park.

What is good Italian food without a good bottle of red wine or a cold bottle of Peroni? Those can be purchased at Labella Vita which is right next to Consiglio's Restaurant. We were blown away when we saw "Garlic, The Musical" playing during the summer at Consigilos Restaurant! How awesome is that?

At this point our nostrils started to fill with a smell that every native New Haven person has come to love. Frank Pepe's Pizza! The restaurant was closed at this time so there was no line outside (ironic) but we did see some cool planks of wood holding up a tree that people in line had signed while waiting!

I think its a staple for anyone when done eating at any of these fabulous pizza places to head on over to Libby's Italian Ice and either get just that, Italian ice, or possibly take home a 1/2 dozen of Canollis! Little Italy is so quaint there was a "love yourself" sticker on a trash can outside, where as other parts of New Haven you may have found graffiti.

Closely after Libby's is Abates, and of course Anastisio's! Abates is the only place on all of Wooster that will deliver to you!

The favorite part of our "Urban Hike" was meeting the guys who were outside of the Society of Santa Maria Maddalena! We spoke with Frank, who amazingly was actually born in that very building. He had let us know that the Society of Santa Maria Maddalena was 114 years old and his father was once the president before! I can't explain the overall positive energy that was felt when we went inside the Society's building. You could feel the years of history inside and couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with happiness at Frank spoke about the Society's past because he was beaming with pride.

Wooster St was about to end so we crossed over to the other side and started our way back, where of course Tre Scalini made our mouths water, so of course after passing by cute gardens, and gates, and brown stone walk-ups, we stopped into TOny & Lucille for in my opinion, the world greatest Italian combo. You know its so authentic when you ask the lady outside if they're open and she shouts "Donna, can you make an Italian combo? Is the bread done?" We were all smiles when we were told they would make us an Italian combo even though they weren't open yet!

All in all the day was a huge success, having lived in New Haven my whole life I saw and learned things I was un-aware of. Ive been around the country eating pizza coast to coast and I can still say without a shadow of a doubt that New Haven pizza is by far the best!
